Publicly Available Applets?     Why?

Many "Front Loaded" proofs can be made utilizing freely downloadable
(and Shareware) applications that visually demonstrate internal workings
within a computer system, catching asset-use "in the act".  But there are
certain circumstances wherein "just the right applet" needs to be created.

So, create one already.  Fine.  Now that we have a tool that shows internal
workings effectively, why should opposing management and / or counsel
believe us?  How do they know that our images are what we say they are?

How about if they can freely access the applet also- as a publicly, freely
downloadable open source tool?  What I create today can henceforth be an
objective, standard tool to prove our point beyond dispute, because the tool
is freely available to all.

By placing tools into public use as open source (such as on SourceForge),
as a software application developer, I don't have to wait for a new tool to be
created.  Need a new kind of yardstick to show off a key element of asset use?
No problem.  I can write it today, and tomorrow it is an objective metric that
must be respected as proof; since it is open source, it is above reproach.

Such applets are worth far more as open freeware than as "proprietary code",
since the opposition can repeat our experiment, then... "read it and weep".

While such publicly available applets may facilitate more clearly demonstrable
evidences of use of assets, if a client's standard agreement precludes billing
time for such, I can easily reduce their availability to what I am comfortable
doing on my own time.  I'm often looking for new tools anyway.
